Summary of Project Experience

In the US:  TDG has assisted ASHRAE, the federal government, and four states to upgrade and refine energy efficiency codes for buildings. TDG has provided input and analysis to the revision of three generations of ASHRAE-based codes. Yet today there is considerable room for further savings from additional improvement in the current requirements of codes and standards.

Worldwide:  TDG has helped ten countries to develop or implement energy codes for commercial, public, and residential buildings:

  • Malaysia
  • Thailand
  • Philippines
  • Indonesia
  • Jamaica
  • Ivory Coast
  • Vietnam
  • Egypt
  • India
  • Singapore

Our efforts produced a first generation energy code for nine countries, while for Singapore we assisted in updating an exiting energy code.

Such energy code programs can have substantial potential energy savings.

  • In developing or newly industrialized countries, large buildings can use over 1/3 of the electricity being generated.
  • Energy codes may help reduce energy use in new buildings by about 20% to 35% on a cost-effective basis from a building owner's economic perspective.
  • From a national economic perspective, potential benefits can be even more striking -- economically optimal energy code requirements may reduce energy use by 50% to 60% from current levels.
