Example Projects

ASHRAE Standard 90.1 Standing Standards Project Committee: Joseph Deringer, President of TDG, participated in the ASHRAE 90.1 Standing Special Project Committee (SSPC 90.1) that revised this energy standard for buildings, except low-rise residences. He chaired the 90.1 envelope sub-committee from 1985-1900 and from 2001-2004. He is currently a member of both the full SSPC 90.1 committee as well as its envelope sub-committee

Egyptian Energy Efficiency Building Code: TDG has led an International Consultant (IC) team that provided technical assistance and training to an Egyptian Energy Code Working Group that has been developing Egyptian codes for energy efficient residential and commercial buildings.

The project is funded by GEF, with oversight by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). TDG has led an international team that has included Joe Huang, Moncef Krarti, Jamil Masud, and Marlin Addison (2001-2003).

Vietnam Energy Efficiency Commercial Building Code, Energy and Economic Analyses: TDG is leading an International Consultant (IC) team that is developing an energy efficiency commercial building code (EECBC), working in collaboration with the Vietnamese Ministries of Industry and Construction. In the process, the IC team is providing assistance and training to a team of local Vietnamese consultants in (1) conducting building surveys of new commercial buildings in Hanoi and Ho Chi Min City, (2) in using DOE-2.1E to develop parametric energy analyses for typical Vietnamese buildings, (3) in developing the formats and requirements for the EECBC, and (4) developing a code implementation plan. The project is for the Vietnam Ministries of Industry and Construction and for The World Bank, with the Hanoi Architectural University, Enerteam (in Ho Chi Min City), and IC team members Taylor Engineering, Joe Huang, Jamil Masud, John Armstrong, and Tanmay Tathagat (2001-2003).

International Survey of Implementation of Energy Standards: Helped design and conduct survey of international experience in implementing energy standards for commercial buildings. Applied survey results to efforts to more effectively implement an energy standard in the Philippines. With LBL, for US AID (1997-98).

Code Ivoirien de Qualité Energétique des Bâtiments: Provided technical and procedural guidance and review to adapt results from US, Asia and Jamaica to French West Africa. For ESMAP, World Bank.

Jamaica Energy Efficiency Building Code: Provided the technical direction to implement an energy code in Jamaica over an eight year period. Designed and implemented a capacity-building project approach in which Jamaican professionals developed the products. Activities included public review of the energy code, the development of compliance guidelines and procedures, energy and economic analysis studies of impacts, and workshops for architects, engineers and suppliers. Managed by ESMAP, World Bank, funded by CIDA.

For specific examples of TDG work on EEBC guidelines, please open the following appendixes from the 1994 Jamaican Energy Efficiency Building Code Compliance Guidelines (MS Word format):

Revision of State Energy Codes - Minnesota, Florida, New Mexico, and Massachusetts: In each case, advised the State Energy Office on approaches to energy code revisions for new commercial buildings (1984-1994).

ASEAN-USAID Buildings Energy Conservation Project: Assisted in the development of energy efficiency standards in four countries:

  • Malaysia
  • Thailand
  • Philippines
  • Indonesia

TDG helped form in-country technical committees, and assisted those committees to develop draft standards, compliance guidelines, and energy analyses (1986-90).

Research to Upgrade ASHRAE Standard 90: Key input on major research effort to improve the standard's energy efficiency. For USDOE (1981-1983).

Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS): Managed the development of two national databases for commercial buildings; Ph. 1: 1800 buildings; Ph. 2: 168 buildings in detail. By AIA/RC, for USDOE (1978-80).
