Professional Association Activities

Joseph Deringer, President of TDG, is active in several professional associations, especially in the development of standards and guidelines for building performance, sustainability, and energy efficiency.

His recently activities are summarized below for the following activities:

  • Standard 90.1, Energy Efficiency (ASHRAE/IESNA)

  • Standard 55, Thermal Comfort (ASHRAE)

  • Advanced Energy Design Guide (AEDG) for Small Office Buildings (AIA/ASHRAE/IESNA/NBI )

  • NIBS Workshops on Building Performance

  • NIBS Commissioning Guideline for Exterior Enclosures of Buildings (CxEE)

ASHRAE Standard 90.1
Standing Standards Project Committee

Joseph Deringer has participated in the ASHRAE 90.1 Standing Special Project Committee (SSPC 90.1) for about 15 years over two different periods. He was a key participant in the process that produced the 90-1-1989 version, and he chaired the 90.1 envelope sub-committee from 1985-1990. He has served on the committee a 2nd time since 2000, and has chaired the envelope sub-committee a 2nd time from 2001-2004. He is currently a member of both the full SSPC 90.1 committee as well as its envelope sub-committee.

ASHRAE Standard 55
Standing Standards Project Committee

This ASHRAE Standing Standard Project Committee (SSPC) develops and refines an international standard that defines procedures and criteria for determining thermal comfort conditions in buildings. Joseph Deringer has served as a voting member of this committee since 1999. A major new version of the standard - ASHRAE Standard 55-2005 - was published early in 2005. A figure from the document is shown to the right.

Advanced Energy Design Guide (AEDG) for Small Office Buildings - AIA / ASHRAE / IESNA / NBI

In 2003-2004 four associations -- AIA, IESNA, ASHRAE and NBI -- collaborated to produce an Advanced Energy Design Guideline (AEDG) for small office buildings. The AIA asked Joseph Deringer to serve as one of three AIA volunteer members on the technical committee for this special project.

The objective was to produce design guidance for small office buildings to would produce 30% energy savings from the ASHRAE/ IESNA Standard 90.1-1999. Typical offices of of 5,000 and 20,000 square feet were analyzed.

NIBS Commissioning Guideline for Building Exterior Enclosures (Cx EE)

In 2004-2005, Joseph Deringer chaired this National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) committee of over 20 experts to produce a commissioning guideline for building exterior enclosure.
